10. SOLAR AND LUNAR ECLIPSE

The eclipse is of two types — the solar eclipse and the lunar eclipse. The more frequent one is the solar eclipse. The lunar eclipse takes place less frequently. When the moon comes between the earth and the sun, the light from the sun stops falling on the earth. This process is known as the solar eclipse. Sometimes it is complete and sometimes it is partial. When it is partial, a part of the sunlight stops falling on the earth. But when the earth comes between the moon and the sun and the shadow of the earth falls on the moon, this process is known as the lunar eclipse. The solar eclipse lasts usually for a few minutes only.

Now we have got developed sources by which we get the information of an eclipse in advance. The scientific reason of an eclipse is estimated to be that when the moon revolves round the earth, and the earth revolves round the sun, a time comes when the moon comes between the sun and the earth, thus causing a solar eclipse. At such moment the sun is not visible from the earth because of the moon coming in the way. But when in these revolutions, the earth comes between the moon and the sun and the earth’s shadow falls on the moon, the moon is not visible from the earth.

Solar eclipse and Lunar eclipse both have great importance for the Hindus. They believe that on the day of solar eclipse, people should go to the Ganga or other rivers and see the eclipse in the water of the river and afterwards should take bath and give in charity. This will bring good luck. They do not eat anything during the eclipse. Solar eclipse should not be seen with naked eyes as it may cause blindness.
